Over the past two decades, the rate of delivery by cesarean section in the world has
increased from approximately 5 percent in the mid 1960¡¯s to more than 30 percent in
1990¡¯s. This increase has been attributed to a wide variety of factors, including
increased rates of repeat cesarean section and more frequent use of cesarean section for
dystocia, fetal distress, and malpresentation. Other, more speculative, factors thought to
be related to the increasing rate of cesarean childbirth include the relative safety of the
procedure for the mother, the influence of the changing demographic characteristics of
pregnant women, and the medical and legal climate. The current study was undertaken
this issue with brief review of literature with some suggestions for resolution, including
vaginal birth after cesarean.
